Field Trip

Puna Geothermal Venture Tour

7:00 AM - 6:00 PM | Sunday, October 27

Located on the Kilauea East Rift Zone, the Puna Geothermal Venture, owned by Ormat Technologies, produces 38 megawatts of electricity for the big Island of Hawai’i each year (roughly 10% of the community’s use) with zero-carbon emissions.

In early May of  2018, Kilauea, began a months-long eruption, which went on to produce a billion cubic yards of lava. In the wake of the eruption, Puna Geothermal Venture found itself entirely surrounded by lava. Working closely with oversight partners, PGV has designed, engineered and cleared a new path to the facility.

On this field trip, our knowledgeable guides will provide you with expert commentary on the triumphant history and hopeful future of PGV!

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to explore many unique geological and natural sites that the Big Island has to offer - both before and after the PGV tour!

The tour will be held on: Sunday, October 27 with a departure time of 7:00 AM (loading between 6:40 AM - 6:50 AM) returning to the Hilton Waikoloa at approximately 6:00 PM.

Separate registration required. Transportation, bottled water and safety equipment is included in the registration fee. Cost is $225 per person. Limited space available. Closed toe shoes required. The cost of lunch (stopping in Keaau) is NOT included.

This tour is open to Indigenous Geothermal Symposium attendees only through October 15, 2024. If the tour is not sold-out by that date, the tour will be open to conference attendees on the waitlist.
