Panel 5A: Geothermal for the US Department of Defense (DOD) - Partnering for Energy Resiliency and Independence: An Update on Seven Ongoing Projects

Date: Wednesday, October 30, 2024
Time: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Room: Monarchy (Grand Ballroom)

Description

10 USC 2991 states that Secretary of Defense shall “ensure the readiness of the armed forces for their military missions by pursuing energy security and energy resilience.” Geothermal, which can provide 24/7 firm power is a perfect fit for this mandate. The DOD, through the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has awarded multiple agreements for geothermal exploration at military installations in the US under a solicitation that was issued in early 2023. This panel will bring together the awardees to provide an overview of the work that has been completed thus far, as well as have a discussion around the private sector working with the DOD and how geothermal can help DOD to achieve their energy goals.
